Knowing when to be satisfied with your winnings, or knowing when to let your losses go and leave a table, can be a difficult decision to make. On the one hand if you are winning money and all is going well, then what reason could you have for wanting to cut short this good run? And on the other hand, if you have faith in your ability as a player, why not continue playing if you are losing, because you trust you have the ability to win it back.

The answer to the first of these is that often things can change at a cash table, perhaps a weak player who you have won a lot from leaves, and a strong player who begins to counter your style of play well, sits down. In this case there is no shame in feeling that you have done well enough to leave the table without getting involved any further. Perhaps also you might have set up your table image as loose, and after showing some made hands and taking down some pots the other players are no longer giving much action. Rather than start throwing some chips around to project this image again, it is sometimes best to be happy with what you have and leave the table.

On the other side of the coin, if you have had a bad day sometimes it is best to recognise that however well you might be playing, the cards just aren’t being kind. What I can say however, is that for me, re buy tournaments are a no go zone, it goes completely against the whole idea of poker that you can throw all your chips in with poor judgement, get it entirely wrong and lose, and still… carry on playing in the tournament.
